Controversial, Technical Advance

Studies of the neural basis of perceptual representation have often invoked either prototype or adaptation effects (e.g. functional magnetic resonance imaging [fMRI] studies of face representation). Through means of a simulation, empirical data and a detailed and careful discussion, the authors highlight how the two effects are often confounded and suggest ways to mitigate the confound. From both methodological and theoretical perspectives, this paper provides important insights.
