  Research Interest:

My research is in the technical development and applications of Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) methods to understand human brain function. I am involved in the development of a noninvasive method to measure cerebral blood flow — arterial spin labeling (ASL) perfusion MRI. We are pursuing several directions including high magnetic field, parallel imaging, artifact reduction, simultaneous oxygenation imaging, pediatric applications and to use ASL as a new contrast for functional neuroimaging studies. We are starting to use perfusion fMRI for cognitive neuroscience studies, including psychological stress, sustained attention, drug addiction, learning and sleep. I am trying to support and promote the use of perfusion fMRI in the functional neuroimaging community by disseminating the ASL sequences through our website at www.cfn.upenn.edu/perfusion I am also collaborating with researchers in nuclear medicine (PET), optical imaging and electrophysiology (EEG) to combine fMRI with these methods.
